Where does the money go? Finding $3,000 to $10,000 a year in household expenses

Most families we meet have no clear picture of where their money goes each month. Not because they're careless, but because nobody has ever sat down with them and looked. When we do, the result is usually the same: thousands of dollars a year that could be working harder.

Start with the bills nobody reads

The first place we look is the recurring expenses that run on autopilot: electricity, gas, internet, mobile plans, insurance policies and subscriptions. Most were set up years ago, and most have crept up since. A policy renewed at the same insurer for five years is rarely the best price. A phone plan from 2021 is almost certainly paying for data you don't use.

None of this requires sacrifice. It requires a couple of hours, a spreadsheet and a willingness to make a few phone calls. For many clients, this step alone identifies between $3,000 and $10,000 a year.

The aim isn't to stop enjoying the things that matter to you. It's to make sure your money is being used intentionally.

Give every dollar a job

Once the savings are found, the harder part begins: keeping them. Money freed up from a cheaper insurance policy will disappear into everyday spending unless it is given somewhere to go. That is why the second step is a realistic budget, one that covers your commitments, leaves room to enjoy life, and directs what's left towards reducing debt.

Directed at a home loan, those savings compound. An extra $500 a month on a $600,000 loan at 6.35% takes roughly eight years off a 30-year term and keeps well over $200,000 in interest out of the bank's hands. You can test your own numbers with our repayment calculator.

Review it, then review it again

This isn't a one-off exercise. Circumstances change, providers change their pricing, and habits drift. We check the budget and progress with clients monthly, and every six months we repeat the broader expense review to catch anything that has crept back up.
